Day 1

And so it begins. Another blog is born. And like so many before, it is very likely predestined to die a quiet, lonely death starved of regular nourishment or praise.

Well, so what?

This is day one. I’m optimistic and I intend to document within these posts my journey back to what I once was – a web developer.

Now don’t get me wrong. I love what I do. I am the executive director for the central web team at Washington University in St. Louis. I lead a team of incredibly smart and talented individuals and we are responsible for the university’s primary public-facing websites: https://wustl.edu, https://source.wustl.edu, https://fuse.wustl.edu and many more. This is what I want to do and I love it.

I just miss that piece of me I lost getting here – that piece who wasn’t afraid to single-handedly tackle any web development problem that came across my computer screen – web application/database design, APIs, IA, coding (HTML, CSS, XML, JavaScript, PHP, Perl, Java, Drupal, Joomla, Moodle, Sakai), whatever.

But this journey back to what I once knew so well is now utterly overwhelming and more than a little terrifying. You see, I faded from the world of web development before responsive design, before CSS preprocessors were a thing, before WordPress was the thing, before JavaScript became whatever it is today, before GitHub, SubLime Text 2, VVV and so, so much more. The world of a web developer seems so much more complicated today – more complicated than necessary really, but I intend to do my best to get back in.

And so it begins. Time to start replacing what I’ve lost with what I’ll find.

This is Day 1.
