40 Days In – A Look Back

Well, it’s been about 40 days – almost 6 weeks – since I began this quest to rediscover web development.

During that time, I’ve learned a fair amount about WordPress theme and plugin development and I’m about to venture into CSS and front-end dev.

Not bad, but 40 days feels like a lot and I had expected, for this amount of time, I’d be farther along this quest, so I have mixed feelings about my progress so far.

Maintaining this blog has taken a lot more time and effort than I originally anticipated. I find I’m spending nearly as much time writing about what I’ve done as I am writing code and learning new skills.

Now, I don’t think that is a bad thing. This blog has helped me reflect back on what I’ve learned and has kept me focused on moving forward, even if it’s at a pace slower than I like.

I’ve also found that maintaining this blog and telling this story has changed my process. In the past, I would have read just enough to get started and then jumped head-first in a project. Learn by trial-and-fire. Rewrite my solution 5 or 6 times, improving with each iteration until I fully understood what I was doing and felt like I had something to be proud of. Somehow, maintaining this blog has made me more deliberate and that is a good thing.

Well, I’m 40 days in. It’s been fun so far. Can’t wait to see where I’ll find myself after the next 40 days.
